Goksu means Blue Water. Bright blue color of the river is caused by the minerals (calcium) of limestone in the valley.
The river is 260 kilometers long and flows into the Mediterranean Sea at the coastal town of Silifke on the southern coast of Turkey. The Selef river delta, together with Lake Akgöl and the Paradeniz Inland Sea, is one of the most important breeding grounds of the Middle East. More than 300 bird species have already been observed: flamingos, bitterns, bee-eaters, nightingales, kingfishers, gulls and several songbirds breed here. The loggerhead turtle also lays its eggs here.
